At Scatter, we sit at the intersection of art and technology. In that same vain, artists in this broader space don't always have a builder's mindset, and vice versa, builders aren't always as creative. It is rare to find those exceptional founders that embody the spirit of both. Today we're interviewing moemoe llc ↗ artist & creator Bluu, who has been building nonstop since they've released their NFT project.
Bash: Welcome, dear Bluu. Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak with us. I know you have lots you’re working on so let’s jump right into it. I’ve been seeing your presence on X from a distance, and even when your account wasn’t as big as it is now, one thing I noticed is you engage with your followers heavily and they engage back. Is this something that comes to you naturally or is there intention behind letting everyone know you’re a very down to Earth person?
Bluu: Thank you for noticing <3 Ignoring people makes me feel bad, most of the time. I still try to avoid toxic interactions. It’s not always easy, but my approach is “if you do not have anything positive to say, or something that adds to the conversation, just don’t speak”. I am far from being a saint, I just don’t waste energy on that stuff. I fall into ragebait from time to time but I try to avoid it. I hate the idea of the distant artist. I do this to stay among people, to build friendships, to be understood. I am no better than anyone and I don’t like to be perceived as out of reach.
Bash: Also early on, I noticed you produced a lot of art for the love of the game, like making silly hats or fun edits of people’s profile pictures. When did your journey into digital art begin? Have you been making art since you were younger?

Bluu: I have always been making art since I have memory. I feel the need to express myself. I don’t really care about the media or the tools, I just need to let it out. That’s why moemoe slogan is “the art doxxing the artist”, I put myself into my creations. I like to make music, write in rhyme and prose, make videos, design and craft clothes, build legos without instructions. I find it therapeutic. I do it to be heard, I want to be seen, I don’t like building sand castles. I like to craft shelters though, for people who seek recovery and can see themselves in what I do. I like to make others happy. I didn’t mention drawing because is kinda new to me. I started drawing last year, in May. I never picked up a pencil to draw, my approach was digital from the start. The process that guided me there is the same that moved me from DJing to music production. I didn’t want to make remixes anymore, I wanted to make my own thing. The only boundary becomes my own skill in representing my ideas.

Bash: We’ve talked about drawing in private, but I also see a lot of aspects of digital design in your work. Without giving out any trade secrets, how would you describe your unique art style?
Bluu: I can’t forget what brought me here. Digital design and composition have been my first approach to digital art. When I draw something I tend to complete the painting with more elements, decorations, to frame it in a wider perspective. I add text, shapes, screenshots, photographs. I love the mixed media approach. I don’t really think about what I’m doing when I’m doing it. My approach to art has always been punk, dirty, emotional. When I start drawing I don’t know what the final piece will be, I start from somewhere and then I let the mind flow.

Bash: You’ve put so much into moemoe LLC. A beautiful interactive website ↗, Social Credit Score that rewards your community, NFT Builder to make custom MOE’s, and even developer tools that we’ve integrated here at Scatter. Personally this is a level of dedication I love seeing from builders, regardless of market conditions. Where does this drive to keep building come from?
Bluu: I appreciate a lot your kind words. As per above, that’s another creative outlet. Is another means to express myself. I do it chaotically but I do it. It also serves the secondary purpose to build an identity and give the community a sense of belonging. Why did I make the dev tools is a different point. I made them because I needed them and they weren’t available anywhere for free. And then I shared it with you guys because I thought they could help others in my same position and I love being recognized, is such a pleasure to see my name on the tools page. It makes me feel seen. I like when people see what I do and then tell me I am good at it.
Bash: You’re so full of love and joy (moemoe means I love you <3) and it’s reflected in your project. What were some inspirations for you and moemoe?
Bluu: The collections that have inspired my design process the most have been Yumemono ↗ for the thick line art of the base model and saturated colors, Radbro Webring ↗ for the chaotic traitmaxxing overlaying style, Retarts ↗ and Oekaki Maker ↗ the left hand drawing approach and Remilio ↗ for the idgaf traits design. But, outside of web3, I took a lot from the music and fashion world, I love designer clothes and icons' personal style.
Moreover, I am passionate about true crime, the collection is full of references to violent cultism and mass shooters,especially the backgrounds. Moemoe LLC is a chaotic collection, the traits are designed to clash and generate curiosity representing the seeking for a personal style through trial and error, accompanied by a constant feeling of “I don’t care”. My main inspiration for the community approach and the vibe curation was the Yumemono groupchats and the Oekaki Discord server ↗. I have been on the internet for a long time and I do not appreciate, nor understand, people who hang out together just to one up each other or being mean and abrasive. My aim is to be surrounded by people who support each other, who can have a discourse and teach me something.

Bash: Being an internet power user can be a source of freedom or a doomscroll trap hole for some people. Has your online life helped you grow as an artist? Should people touch more grass or more keyboard?
Bluu: Internet gives you the possibility to be seen by the greatest amount of people. I think that if you want to grow as an artist you need to build your online network. I should touch grass more and less keyboard. But I can’t right now. If I had a team to split my work with I could. Right now, touching grass means to work less, and is not the right moment to slow down. But, I find important to remember that the good life is not here, is not online. What we build here must be translated into an environment you can feel with all of your 5 senses. If you never get out of the loop you cannot enjoy your progress, and all your work is for nothing.
