ETH, WETH & Marketplace Currencies
Check the network and payment currency before buying, listing, or making an offer. A token balance on one network is separate from the same-named token on another network. Currencies vary by collection and network; use the labels on the collection's marketplace page and in checkout as your reference. ETH and WETH below explain one common currency pair.
Scatter also supports Cross-Chain Payments through Relay, so funds on one network can pay for a supported purchase on another.
ETH and WETH
ETH is Ethereum's native currency. WETH (Wrapped Ether) represents ETH as an ERC-20 token, allowing applications to use token approvals to transfer it.
| Currency | Common use |
|---|---|
| ETH | Paying Ethereum gas and purchasing ETH-priced listings. |
| WETH | Making offers that can be accepted later. |
A WETH offer can be authorized in advance, allowing a seller to accept without the buyer returning to approve the purchase at that moment. Review the scope of an offer before signing; see Offers & Bids.
Receiving WETH from a Sale
WETH payments stay in your wallet as WETH. If you want ETH, open the Swap page and manually unwrap the WETH on the network where you received it. Scatter Swap ↗
Wrapping and Unwrapping
Scatter can guide you through wrapping ETH when an action requires WETH. For manual wrapping or unwrapping, connect your wallet and open Scatter Swap ↗.
Use these steps to wrap ETH on Ethereum.
- Select ETH under Pay With and WETH under Receive. Choose Ethereum for both tokens. The token picker lets you filter by network and search by token name, symbol, or address.
- Enter the amount under Pay With. Review the Receive amount and the 1 ETH = 1 WETH rate. Keep enough ETH for network gas.
- Select Wrap and confirm the transaction in your wallet.
- Wait for Transaction Complete, then check your WETH balance. The completion message includes a link to the transaction.
To unwrap, reverse the token pair so Pay With is WETH and Receive is ETH on the same network. Enter the amount, review the conversion, and confirm the unwrap transaction in your wallet. Keep native currency available for gas.
Swapping Other Tokens
Swap also supports other tokens on Scatter's supported networks. Choose the token and network for Pay With and Receive, then review the available quote and any fees before confirming. For wrapping on another network, select its native token and corresponding wrapped token on that same network.
Wrapping in Bid Checkout
When your WETH balance falls short of the bid amount, checkout shows Wrap ETH → WETH in the funding summary. Scatter uses your existing WETH balance and wraps only enough ETH to cover the difference. Confirm the wrap in your wallet first, then approve spending if needed and sign the bid. See Approve Payment Currency and Sign the Bid.
The same process applies when checkout needs the wrapped form of another network's native token. Check the token and network shown in checkout. See Other Networks and Currencies.
Other Networks and Currencies
The marketplace supports every chain supported by minting. Use the shared Supported Chains list as the reference.
Marketplace currencies vary by network. Read the currency labels beside floor prices, listings, bids, and sale history on the collection's marketplace page, then check the currency shown in checkout. ETH/WETH examples in these docs do not apply to every network.
Trades use the network's native token by default, with bids using its wrapped equivalent on native-currency markets. A collection owner can change the market's Settlement Currency to an approved currency available on that chain. When a stablecoin is selected, new listings and bids use that stablecoin, as described below.
For a direct same-chain purchase, have the required payment token on the NFT's network, plus its native token for gas. Alternatively, use a supported cross-chain payment route to pay from another network. Payment currency and gas currency can differ. The shared chain table lists native gas tokens; it is not a list of marketplace payment currencies.
Cross-Chain Payments
Scatter Marketplace supports paying from one chain to buy an NFT on another through Relay. You do not need to manually bridge funds before purchasing. For example, ETH held on one network can fund an NFT purchase on another when that route is available in checkout.
Under Pay With, choose an available payment token and the network holding your funds. Scatter offers two kinds of funding currency:
- The listing's currency on a supported network where you hold it.
- A supported network's native currency, such as ETH on Ethereum or Base.
The selector is not limited to ETH or to the collection's own network. It also does not offer arbitrary ERC-20 tokens from your wallet. Use the available currency and network pairs shown in checkout.
Relay handles the cross-chain funding route and any conversion needed to pay for the purchase. For example, you can pay with native ETH for a stablecoin-priced listing when that route is offered, without manually swapping to the stablecoin or bridging first. The NFT is purchased on its own network; choosing a different funding network does not move the NFT to that network.
Cross-chain options are labelled (Relay). For an ETH-priced NFT on Base, checkout can show ETH on Base alongside ETH on Ethereum (Relay). Choose the network holding the funds you want to spend.
Before confirming, check:
- The wallet, payment token, and network you are paying from.
- The NFT and the network where you will receive it.
- The quoted payment amount and any conversion, routing, or gas costs shown.
Supported payment options depend on the available route. Follow checkout's wallet prompts and wait for the destination purchase to complete before checking your NFT balance or retrying. A payment submitted on the funding network is not, by itself, confirmation that the NFT purchase has finished.
Cross-chain funding does not change the collection's Settlement Currency. It lets you pay from a supported balance elsewhere while the purchase settles in the currency used by that market.
Settlement Currency
Each NFT collection is its own market on Scatter, with one selected market currency. The collection owner chooses that currency through Settlement Currency, from the options approved for the collection's chain. Different collections on the same chain can use different market currencies. Buyers and bidders use the collection's selected currency for new orders; they do not choose a separate settlement currency for each order. A buyer can still use a different funding currency through Pay With; Relay converts the payment to the currency required by the listing. Native-currency markets use the wrapped equivalent for bids, as explained above.
The marketplace supports a limited set of ERC-20 alternatives, rather than arbitrary custom tokens. Marketplace settlement currency is separate from the currencies a creator can configure for mint lists.
Open Collection Management → Marketplace, choose a currency from the Marketplace Currency dropdown, and select Save Currency. Only currencies approved for the collection's chain are available. The change applies to new listings and bids; existing signed orders are not cancelled by changing this setting. See Collection Marketplace Settings for payment configuration and performance charts.
If the owner selects a stablecoin such as USDC, new bids use that stablecoin instead of the chain's wrapped native token. Before bidding, obtain the selected stablecoin on the collection's network. If your funds are in ETH, swap ETH for that stablecoin first; wrapping ETH into WETH does not provide a USDC balance. Keep the network's native token available for gas, and complete any required payment-token approval.
The approved ERC-20 market alternatives are:
| Chain | ERC-20 market currencies |
|---|---|
| Base | USDC |
| Polygon | USDC.e, WETH |
| Abstract | USDC.e |
| Robinhood | USDG |
Other supported chains use their native token for trades and its wrapped equivalent for bids. Check the collection page and checkout for the selected payment currency. Direct payments with an approved ERC-20 still require native currency for gas; for cross-chain payments, review the selected route's quote and wallet prompts.
For ERC-20 purchases, follow Buying with an ERC-20 Token: approve token spending when needed, then confirm the separate purchase transaction.
